TWO NEW PUBLICATIONS RELEASED

The Large Queen Stamps of Canada and their Use, by the Duckworths has been updated and re-issued after being out of print for many years. The 2nd edition now includes new colour illustrations and updated information on the stamps. The full period of printings and use of the Large Queen stamps from 1868 onward is covered - the 5 cents value is now included, and coverage of the 12 1/2 and 15 cents is now extended beyond 1872. Dated collections of each value are shown to illustrate the progression of printings. The chapters on postal history are maintained from the first edition.

The Postage Stamps of Canada in the Small Queen Era, 1870-1897 is a new book which builds on earlier works by John Hillson and adds research on the printing plates by Ted Nixon. It covers proofs and stamps of the Small Queen issue, plus the Widow Weeds and the 1891 essays by the Canada Bank Note Engraving and Printing Co. It presents colour illustrations of the full range of shades of each value, and the prominent re-entries on each value. In addition it traces the printing characteristics through the three distinct periods involving Ottawa and Montreal locations. Finally it identifies and illustrates the rates and uses of each value.

Only 200 copies of each book have been printed.

FEES INCREASE & NEW SUBMISSION FORM

Please use the new submission form found elsewhere on the website effective from January 1, 2009.  Please note that the fees have been increased but the structure has remained the same.  This is the first fee increase since the early 1990’s.  Regarding the cost of return postage and packaging the Foundation will continue to absorb this where only 1 or 2 items are submitted, but a $10.00 fee is requested with submissions including 3 or more items.  Catalogue values can be determined using prices for “fine” condition and with no extras added for mint, never hinged stamps.

Please use a separate form for each item – it will be apparent from the new form that it also serves as the worksheet for Committee members.  Complete the top half of the form, more specifically the boxes entitled Submitter’s Statement, Item Submitted and Opinion Requested.

HARRY SUTHERLAND PHILATELIC LECTURE SERIES, and OTHER NEW UPDATES

On April 5, 2006, we hosted the inaugural Harry Sutherland Philatelic Lecture, along with the Philatelic Specialists Society of Canada. Our guest was Patricia Stillwell Walker who gave a fascinating presentation on the creation of her exhibit of “The Postal History of Ireland.” On the same evening we officially named our library The Harry Sutherland Philatelic Library.

Our director, Kenneth Rowe, who was a founding member of the Board of Directors in 1975, has graciously agreed to become Honorary Chairman of the Foundation.

We have released a new publication, the first in several years, entitled “The Pence Covers of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, 1851-1860” by George B. Arfken. This lovely book is illustrated in full colour, and is hardbound in the 8 ½ X 11 inch format. The price is $100 plus shipping cost. It can be ordered directly from the Foundation.

Our Expert Committee has been receiving an increasing volume of submissions over the past few years and now meets every 4 to 5 weeks. Our CrimeScope CS-16 Forensic Light Machine using lightwave technology is proving to be very useful. With a few exceptions, certificates are generally completed and returned within 8 weeks.

Our philatelic research library has received two large donations which will necessitate some reorganization of our shelf space.

Finally, The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada has completed the move of its administrative operations into our offices at 10 Summerhill Avenue. Our Executive Assistant, Margaret Schulzke, will be acting in the same role for the RPSC.

As always, if you have any questions about the Foundation, please call us.
